San Gimignano, Italy
This Tuscany hill town is known for its 14 medievel towers that still stand (out of a "Manhattan look" of original 60). We walked the traffic-free cobbled main street to Piazza del Duomo and climbed the tallest tower, the 20-story Torre Grossa for more great views of Tuscany.
San Gimignano was also the victim of the plague of 1348, killing 9,000 of it's 13,000 residents! The town then fell under Florence's control and never recovered. So today you take a time warp to the 14th century.
