Martha's Vineyard: Gay Head Cliffs
August 2006: Jordan and I biked from Beetlebung Corner (don't you love that name) to Aquinnah and stopped at the Gay Head Cliffs to walk the beach and take a swim. I was mesmerized by the multi-colored cliffs and the striking blue skies behind them. I was also fascinated by the rock sculptures along the way. Some of them seem to defy gravity. My favorite is in the photo to the right (with a heart on top).

The layers of rock and clay in the cliffs provide a fascinating color array. Where the ocean waves hit the red clay, the blue water turns blood red. The Gay Head lighthouse tops the cliffs. Jordan's bike loop ride took us to fishing village of Menemsha where we took the bike ferry across to the town.

Getting there: You can fly directly into Martha's Vineyard, but it can get expensive. I flew into Boston and took the Peter Pan Bonanza Bus to Wood's Hole and rode the Steamship Authority ferry (see schedule) to VIneyard Haven.

More: Martha's Vineyard Chamber of Commerce.
